DFN Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Michelle
Doll. In this series of figurative paintings, Doll captures moments of
intimate familial interactions, rendering them in iconic form using oil
paint and gold leaf and referencing renaissance compositions.
In her painting Becoming, the artist displays the powerful bond that
exists between mother and child in moments of silence and peace. Her
portrayal suggests that these human connections are sometimes made intense
without the subject’s awareness. In Dawn Goes Down to Day, the artist
shares a quiet moment with herself as she examines her reflection in the
mirror. As Doll states:
With observations from my own life, I strive to expand my awareness
toward a boundless state of being through an interconnection with others. This human interdependence creates a collective common bond and shared sense of experience. I attempt to reveal the desire for security and
protection while alluding to feelings of transience and unease.
Michelle Doll was
born in Canton, Ohio and received a BFA from Kent State University and a MFA
from the New York Academy of Art. Doll’s paintings have been exhibited
internationally and have been featured in shows curated by Eric Fischl, April Gornik, David
Salle, and Will Cotton. This is her first show at DFN Gallery.
