Dozier Bell

New Drawings
APRIL 9 – MAY 2, 2009

DFN Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of small-scale charcoal drawings by Dozier Bell. These new drawings of darkly romantic skies, landscapes, and parachutists reflect some of Bell's new preoccupations.

In her sky and landscape drawings, Bell depicts remembered scenes that have evolved over time due to  the memories associated with them. Seen during a period of losses in her personal life, they reflect a degree of pain and nostalgia for what was passing, while also hinting at the excitement of engagement with the kind of irresistible forces that remove the burdensome preciousness of one’s individual plans and choices.

Bell's drawings of parachutists are a metaphoric expression of the sense of flight or of free falling.  The parachutists are suspended in space and time; there is a sense of freedom and boundlessness in these images that touches on something more fundamental than past causes and future consequences.  The future is curiously irrelevant at that moment.

Dozier Bell studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. She has received numerous awards including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Fulbright Artist-in-Residence Program. This is her third solo exhibition at DFN Gallery.

A reception for the artist will be held on
Thursday, April 9th from 6 to 8 PM
