CLARE
KIRKCONNELL
RAIN
APRIL
11 - MAY 6
DFN Gallery is pleased to present an
exhibition of work by California artist Clare Kirkconnell. In
Rain, Kirkconnell's first solo show in New York, the artist furthers
her exploration of water in a series of meditative oil paintings.
By showing context in these natural abstractions, she effectively
tethers her subjects to reality.
Drawn to elements that expose the inherent
beauty of the seemingly ordinary, Kirkconnell paints rain, reflections,
shadows, and the surface of water. In such paintings as "Silver
Blue Water" and "Rain and Fog" her palette is deliberately quiet, the
paint applied in translucent oil glazes to capture a contemplative feel.
At the same time, the artist's process is vigorous. She removes as
much paint as she applies, and destroys and reworks passages as she
creates. While Kirkconnell's paintings of water surfaces, such as
"Green Shimmer" and "Autumn Shimmer," are dominated by horizontal
movements, other works, including "Rain III," are energized by more
downward currents.
Born in Brownsville, Texas, Clare
Kirkconnell spent a number of years as a fashion model and actor,
landing several film and television roles, including a three-year part
as the female lead in "The Paper Chase." She turned her attention
to art full time in 1990, attending Santa Monica College, in Santa
Monica, California, and Otis College of Art and Design, in Los Angeles.
Kirkconnell is also represented by John Berggruen Gallery in San
Francisco, and her work can be found in numerous private collections,
including the collection of the American Embassy in Kuwait.
